Vas County: a Kaleidoscope of Impressions

When walking the paths of Vas County visitors encounter the calmness of solemn harmony. One of the most precious gems, the Vend Region, can be found amidst slopes, meadows oozing the feeling of freedom and forests emitting the smell of galipot.

Mount Ság is located in the eastern nook of the county, in Kemenesalja. The inactive volcano could be regarded as an open-air museum, its crate is impressive, and looking out from its peak one will see the perfect beauty of Kemenesalja and the Bakony-region. The mount is famous for its wines, the hillside, which is interspersed with wine cellars, is the home to protected and unique plant species.

Kőszeghegyalja, located at the foothills of the Alps, also has special values and beauties to offer. The small villages and their unique flair makes you want to wonder and reminisce about present and past. This is the region where the Írottkő Nature Park lies, which attracts several hundreds of visitors every year: the listed buildings of the row of wine-cellars in Cák, a sea of chestnut trees, or the Saint Vid church in Velem. Kőszeg with its monuments is the true gem of the region, where the visitor is offered outstanding wines, paired with kind hospitality.

Respecting traditions and a genuine need for modern values have always been of key importance in the cultural and artistic life of this region. The people living here have built their identity basing on Roman history, “the Pannonian Perspective and Consciousness” and the enlightened traditions of preserving cultural heritage. Szombathely, the county seat, is a home of muses.

 Írottkő Natúrpark

The notion of ‘nature park’, as such, does not exist as individual legal category in Hungary; however, such parks are regulated on a high level to the West of our country. To declare an area a nature park requires individual legal action. As far as their number, range of organisation and government support is concerned we can say that France is the leading country, but Austria can also take pride in having 30 such parks that all receive state subsidies and support from the provinces.

 Őrség-Rába-Goricko Natúrpark
The Őrség-Rába-Goričko Nature Park covers an area stretching over three countries and lies on the Austrian-Slovenian-Hungarian border region of the Vend Region.
 Jeli arborétum
Count István Ambrózy-Migazzi began establishing the botanic garden in Jeli in 1922. Besides the soil structure, he also considered the joint presence of sub-alpine and Mediterranean impacts, which can sometimes be the token of the survival of broad-leafed evergreens. In order to establish an environment of high humidity and filtered sunlight he had planted several dozen species of pine trees, yews, cherry laurels, bearberries and hundreds of various bushes.
