As far as the number of listed buildings is concerned, the county is one of the richest places in terms of national heritage in Western Transdanubia. 400 castles are registered among the monuments in Hungary, 11% of them are in Vas County. Large-scale castle reconstruction programmes were launched in the 18th century in the county. In the north of the Vas-Sopron plains, stretching on both sides of the river Rába, and the south of the Kemenesalja region are both rich in protected buildings.
